Grade 3

Third-grade teachers and their students have three standards-based field trip options at Main Street U.S.A. These include Olathe, Communities, and Canada / Mexico.

Students, teachers and volunteers should bring their own sack lunch to Main Street U.S.A. It is easier if the lunches are brought in disposable containers. Please be sure students bring a clear drink for lunch. Students may also bring a water bottle for use during the day.

The Olathe activity day consists of sessions about the former Olathe Naval Air Station, the Santa Fe Railroad, Buddy Rogers, Hower’s Bakery, Old Settlers, schools, a fossil dig, and the Oregon Trail.

The following dates are available for the 2017-18 school year: Dec. 5, Dec. 12.

The Communities activity consists of stations featuring major United States cities which may include Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Kansas City and New York. The cities of Topeka, Kansas City and Wichita in Kansas are included. Part of each activity is the comparison and contrasting of the city with Kansas City.

The following dates are available for the 2017-18 school year: Oct. 26, Oct. 27.

Canada / Mexico

The continent of North America, with emphasis on Canada, Mexico and the United States, provides the basis for this activity day. Canada / Mexico activities compare and contrast the United States’ neighboring countries. Games include hockey and “Coyote and Chickens.” The foods of maple syrup candy and buñuelos will be explored. A comparison of the monetary system of the three countries is part of the session.

There are no remaining dates available for the Canada / Mexico activity.
